Description
Our 1st Marine Expeditionary Force coin represents the ability to unleash awesome combat power through amphibious assault or sustained operations ashore in any environment, the I Marine Expeditionary Force is a Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) of the U.S. Marine Corps. Composed of the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and 1st Marine Logistics Group, I MEF can operate from a sea base, a land base, or both to win decisive victories against any enemy. Among Marines, it is common to pronounce I MEF as “eye mef,” “first mef,” or “one mef.”
As the principal warfighting arm of the Marine Corps, I MEF deploys as a MAGTF for contingency responses or Major Theaters of War, and serves as the core element of a Joint Task Force (JTF) when called upon. Since activation in 1969, I MEF has participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, operations in Somalia, Operation Southern Watch and Operation Desert Thunder in Iraq, and most recently Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The obverse of this bronze coin carries the official seal of the I Marine Expeditionary Force, covered in rich enamel paint, while the reverse features the official seal of the U.S. Marine Corps.
