About Army UCP – ACU

The Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP), used in the Army Combat Uniform, was developed in 2005 to provide effective camouflage across various environments. It uses pixelated images recolored based on Army tests. The pattern featured three universal colors: tan (Desert Sand 500), gray (Urban Gray 501), and sage green (Foliage Green 502). Notably, it excluded the color black, uncommon in natural settings.

UCP was used in various US conflicts including the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War.

In 2014, the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) was announced as UCP’s replacement, with a complete transition by 2019. UCP remains in limited use, like on certain cold weather gear and older body armor.
